Highway crews started work to replace the bridge deck and expansion joints on Thursday, Sept. 15 as part of a $71 million project.
The first phase of a three-part construction project will result in the two lanes being closed through Nov. 22, according to the Delaware River and Bay Authority. A third NJ-bound lane will be closed overnight when concrete is being poured, they said.
Motorists may encounter delays, particularly during rush hour and peak weekend travel times, the authority said.
David A. Hoppenjans, the authority’s chief engineer, said, “The work will completely resurface the New Jersey bound span with completion anticipated in 2023.”
A bypass lane for northbound traffic on the Delaware bound span is now open. This bypass lane channels traffic to the exterior lane of the Delaware bound span and is for passenger cars bound for the New Jersey Turnpike only. Commercial vehicles are not permitted to use the bypass lane.
The remaining three lanes of the Delaware-bound span will remain open to traffic.
